About Estilo Palmer

UNVEILING ESTILO PALMER
Mildred Palmer’s 50 impassioned years in Guatemala 1929 -1981 by Ana Livingstone Paddock.
The book tells the fascinating story of Mildred Palmer, a woman who, after being stranded in Guatemala during the Great Depression, transforms her fate into a life mission. Becoming a visionary entrepreneur and cultural advocate, Mildred establishes an iconic café, revives colonial architecture in Antigua, and redefines tourism in Guatemala. Her unique style, the "Palmer Style," leaves a lasting mark on design and culture while boosting the local economy through innovations like microcredit. This biography, illustrated with over 250 photographs, reveals how her legacy—forgotten for decades—was vital in Antigua's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What a triumph! I just finished reading Estilo Palmer. Mildred Palmer is brought back to life though the flowing text, the many illustrations, and the personal anecdotes by the author. The final few paragraphs are particularly poignant.
She was a woman of a thousand facets, too many to fit in these lines, but I emphasize that she became the safeguard of the World Heritage Site of La Antigua, Guatemala. She was also an innovator granting microcredits to artisans to preserve the textile art that she loved so much. Thank you to the author Ana Livingston Paddock, for spinning and embroidering Mildred's life as an example for locals and foreigners alike who say we love Guatemala. This biography is an inspiration for everyone especially for women!

This book is a jewel. It moved me deeply. It is the work of a true storyteller on the life Mrs. Mildred Palmer, who was great not only because of her stature but also because of her human qualities: her bravery and adventurous spirit, a young woman from the South West USA who came to Guatemala in the first decades of the 20th century.
I waited with great enthusiasm for this work without imagining that through these wonderful and beloved gringas I would get to know my country better! The impeccable thread, the unpublished photographs that Mildred took of that endearing Guatemala from the first half of the last century.
